Newnes campground

33 Ratings

No vehicle access! It's a long, roughly 10km walk to reach Newnes campground. The campground is walk-in only because Wolgan Road has collapsed and there's a landslip risk at Wolgan Gap. Wolgan Road was the only vehicle access into the valley and is managed by Lithgow Council.

Amazing camp-site. Only issue was the overnight low temp of -4.5C.

Great campsite. Saw shooting stars and kangaroos. The road off the highway was very steep and had a few rock slides recently. But it's in the process of being fixed up. Gravel road in. Then a steep dip into the actual campground. Toilets are clean. Went to check out the 4wd driver only side as we left, looked a lot quieter. Will try it out next time

It’s a lovely campground just a few minutes’ drive from the glowworm tunnel track. Don’t expect any phone service. Zilch. But on the upside, you get to take in breathtaking sunrises with the company o... Read more

This is one of the best off the grid sites nsw has to offer.. deep in the newnes state Forrest, mostly flat, fire pits, pit toilets but mostly clean.. there is a small shop that sells basics.. zero phone service, amazing running creek, great walks, hidden swimming holes, wildlife, plenty of gold and coal mining history to discover. Old railway lines, coke ovens, glow worm tunnel(if you’re a keen hiker). 2 wheel drive access, even over the creek crossing if you’re a bit handy behind the wheel.. best To take all you need with you and plenty of water. You won’t be disappointed.

You can usually but there might be a fire ban when you go. Make sure to check before you plan your trip. I’d also bring my own firewood as the shop doesn’t always stock it. by Casey F.
