Campsites

Wheeny Creek campground is a beautiful haven of natural bushland and wildlife. We stayed in June, with early mornings dipping below zero degrees. We camped at the smaller Cheese Tree site, which doesn’t have its own toilet but is a short walk to the Lyrebird site. The toilet there is a basic drop toilet — not the best we’ve seen, but certainly not the worst. One of the toilet doors didn’t lock properly, which was a bit frustrating. The third site has regular flush toilets, though they were in poor condition (e.g. missing seats). The campground is primarily set up for tent camping, as the grassed areas are fenced off from vehicle access. Some parking spots could suit a camper trailer or roof-top tent, but caravans would be awkward to manoeuvre and the winding road down to the campground would be treacherous for towing. There’s no phone signal, so it’s a great opportunity to switch off and enjoy some peace and quiet. Be sure to bring your own water, as none is available on-site. The firepit facilities are excellent — perfect for enjoying evenings around the fire (check for fire restrictions before you go). The birdlife was a real highlight: bellbirds, and the wonderfully iconic call of whip birds, kookaburras at daybreak, and magpies all day long. Not to mention bursts of colour and sound from cockatoos and lorikeets. Just keep an eye on your food and rubbish bin — the bushturkies (gweela) are always lurking and not shy about stealing a snack! Speaking of rubbish - bins are provided on the road back out, but were quite full. Always be prepared to take it all with you. The creek itself was a little sludgy. I wouldn't swim in it, but it made for a pleasant walk along its banks. Our only real complaint was the noise from 4WDs and trail bikes roaring along the nearby fire trails. It wasn’t a safety issue, but it did interrupt the otherwise tranquil atmosphere and birdsong. This was worst on Saturday and slightly better by Sunday. The drive in was relatively easy. We arrived in an AWD, but also saw a Mazda 3 and a Peugeot hatchback that made the journey without issue. All in all, a beautiful stay and a great weekend for a mental reset.
