Back to nature! Fern flats was a great stop for our road trip. Although a very steep hill to get to, it’s worth it for the tranquility and beauty. No drinking water, and only one tap for all campers... Read more

As of writing Fern Flat campground IS open, despite repair works to the bridge. It was very quiet on our stay, had the place to ourselves bar one other camper. The ranger popped round early about 7:30, very friendly and told us it's usually a lot busier, especially at weekends. We didn't realise when booking however that plots 6,7 & 8 are for tents, there is no direct vehicle access for them so if you have a campervan book any of the others. We ended up staying in a different plot, fortunately as it was quiet it wasn't an issue. There's a machine to buy a permit at the hut before you go down the track (which is very bumpy in places). You also have a 5k drive up a mountain to get to the site which is steep in places. If you're lucky you'll see Firefly's, and Platypus if you walk 5 mins back up the track you come in on. (You can also get there by a path in plot 6, turn right at the fork a couple of metres in then follow the river... There's a nice photo spot along the way too) Also: No drinking water, boil first No swimming (stomach bug and ear infections) No showers (some nearby though)
